Self-Building a Garden Office: What's Actually Involved

Self-building sounds like a bigger undertaking than it is. Because our kits are factory pre-cut and labelled, most of what's normally involved in constructing a building — cutting timber to size, framing, insulating — is already done before your kit arrives. Here's what's actually left for you to do.

What skill level do you need?

You don't need specialist trades experience. Reduced panel sizes, labelled components, and a step-by-step build guide keep the process straightforward for anyone comfortable with basic DIY — confident using a drill, reading a plan, and following instructions carefully.

What turns up when your kit arrives

Every kit ships factory-prepared and ready to self-build: pre-cut SIP wall, floor, and roof panels, windows and doors, fixings and jointing foam, plus a full customer instructions booklet. Store the panels somewhere dry until you're ready to build — moisture can make fitting more difficult.

Tools you'll need

• A drill or impact driver
• A tape measure and spirit level
• A ladder
• A foam gun, for airtight joints
• An extra pair of hands to help lift the larger panels

How long does it actually take?

With some help, self-building a kit is typically a matter of days to a couple of weeks — a fraction of the months a traditional extension or brick-built structure takes, since there's no groundwork tied into your house, no waiting on multiple trades, and nothing to build from raw materials on site.
